Web Accessibility - ADA Guidelines
-
Web accessibility is the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites and their content, by persons with disabilities. Through inclusive design and by adhering to global accessibility standards, we try to provide all users with equal access to the information on your website.
It has been mandated that all government-funded entities follow and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act in ensuring that all can access the information provided by the district. While this does not just cover the district website, that will be the focus of the information provided on this page.
Importance
Websites and applications function as interfaces between machines and humans. Browsers as well as media players that deliver video, music, podcast, and other media all serve to deliver data to users, and user inputs back to the device with which the user is interacting.
A website is only as useful as its ability to share information. Accessibility ensures that barriers are removed from a website’s content and the users of that content.
Benefits of Accessible Websites
- Accessible websites built to global accessibility standards are primed for responsive layout displays.
- In a competitive web environment filled with inaccessible content, accessible websites will benefit from the loyalty of a growing disabled community.
- Web accessibility standards often parallel the requirements for SEO. While aiding assistive technology users, well-structured websites also tend to achieve higher search engine rankings than sites designed without accessibility considerations in mind.
Risk of Not Having an Accessible Site
- If people can’t access your content, how will you relay information?
- Legal complaints and lawsuits can be financially crippling and extremely damaging.
- You could be missing out on talent for your business if the online application process is inaccessible.
