Accessible Documents

  • It is just as important to make sure your documents are accessible as well. Just as with your web pages, your documents need to follow the ADA guidelines for accessibility. Microsoft and Adobe have been nice enough to include accessibility checkers in their products that can make it very easy to check and make sure your documents are accessible.

It is your responsibility to make sure the documents you upload to your site are accessible. This includes documents that you may have not created and received from another department. Documents that do not pass accessibility and show an error in the Ally system can and will be removed from your site.

If you receive a document that you did not create and it does not pass accessibility, please inform the creator that you can not use the document unless it is accessible and passes accessibility. It should not be your responsibility to fix a document, as it is a lot harder to correct errors than to create a document with accessibility in mind.

    • Creating a document with accessibility in mind is much easier than trying to correct errors in a document.
    • The document creator is responsible for making sure the document is accessible.
    • Check every document you upload to your site.
    • Keep it simple. The simpler it is, the fewer errors you will introduce into your document. And as a bi-product, it will be easier to read.
